places-card-flamaA grant from the Whole Cities Foundation, one of several charitable foundations supported by Whole Foods Market, will benefit Greater Newark Conservancy’s Court Street Urban Farm through the purchase and installation of a new irrigation system.

The farm, along with other urban farms and community gardens in Newark managed by the Conservancy, produces thousands of pounds of organically managed, healthy produce to support better health and nutrition among community members. The Foundation selected this project in Newark to commemorate the grand opening of a new Whole Foods Market scheduled to open downtown in 2017.

The stated mission of the Whole Cities Foundation is to promote access to fresh, healthy foods in cities with barriers to better nutrition. They do this in part by providing support to urban farms and gardens led by community-based organizations, which is meant to create hyper-local sources of nutritious produce, offer nutritional education programs and contribute to collaborations and partnerships that benefit the communities they serve.
