things-to-do-card_flThis Saturday, December 17th, Have You Met Newark?, most noted for producing walking tours of downtown Newark and the Ironbound, will hold their fourth annual Holiday Shop Hop. This year, they will collaborate with business sustainability organization ForwardEver on the event.

Part walking tour, part shopping jaunt, the event will take participants to local retailers along Washington Street, University Avenue, Halsey Street, and Branford Place before ending at Gallery Aferro’s annual holiday party on Market Street. Along the way, shoppers will enjoy a free hot cocoa from Harvest Table (550 Broad Street), where the event will begin, and can use a $5 voucher they receive with their $10 ticket at one of the shopping stops during the event. A small snack is also included in the ticket price.

“I often hear people asking how they can give back or support Newark. I tell them, there are incredible, top-quality shops and entrepreneurs in this city providing unique goods and services. Buy from them. Work with them. That’s how we can create change,” said Manz.

Through the live experience, the event will underscore the importance of buying local to the health of the local economy; facilitate the habit by providing real-time buying opportunities; and give participants an eye-level view of businesses new and old downtown Newark.

According to a statistic cited by Forward Ever, the American Independent Business Alliance reports that local spending creates nearly two-and-a-half times more local jobs than spending on Amazon.com. Brown said that even modest shifts in spending habits can make a significant difference for local business: “Supporting our small local business community ensures our community’s diverse and unique character, creates jobs and provides our residents and stakeholders with a sense of pride. Consider shifting ten percent of what you spend across the board with a small local business to ensure an inclusive and equitable renaissance in Newark.”

Tickets for the event, which runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., are available on Eventbrite.
